Costs of varicose veins and spider veins treatment are one of the most frequently asked subjects. Patients are rightfully concerned about their out-of-pocket expenses when it comes to vein procedures, especially when there are both medical necessity and cosmetic concerns. In this article, we go over some basic cost information as well as some nuances with insurance coverage. Please note the figures below are based on national averages from various sources and our own practice.

Is Varicose Vein Treatment Covered by Insurance?

When varicose veins and associated conditions cause physical symptoms such as pain, swelling, and fatigue, there is a medical reason to perform vein treatment. As such, varicose veins treatments are often covered by insurance. Medical necessity is established through patient interview and physical exam performed by our vascular surgeons, as well as objective findings on venous reflux ultrasound studies. Currently in our practice, over 90% of the treatments are covered by insurance.

When a treatment is covered by insurance, the patient may have out-of-pocket costs as determined by their deductibles. This is no different than any other medical procedures covered by insurance.

Out-of-Pocket Costs of Vein Procedures

Sclerotherapy Prices

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons statistics report, the average cost of sclerotherapy is $444 in 2019 and $428 in 2022. These figures are on par with most websites that quote an average cost of $350-$400. Some practices offer prices as low as $200 and as high as $600, depending on geographic areas, demand, and extent of treatment. Our practice in Appleton, WI offers a pricing schedule in line with the national average on single session basis, with discounts offered when multiple sessions are recommended by our physicians.

Endovenous Radiofrequency or Laser Ablation

Endovenous ablations are more costly than sclerotherapy given the equipment and expertise involved. Office-based endovenous vein treatment is typically covered by insurance. If a patient is paying strictly out-of-pocket, the national average for office-based radiofrequency ablation is $3,131, and the average cost for laser endovenous ablation is similar at $3,000.

Microphlebectomy

Office-based microphlebectomy procedures generally costs around $1,000-$2,000 nationally.

VeinGogh

VeinGogh is an office-based procedure that is strictly for cosmetic spider vein treatment and is not covered by insurance. The cost of VeinGogh spider vein treatment is around $350-$400, which is similar to sclerotherapy.
